Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Tamar Almassri has condemned in strongest terms the actions of the Israeli army in the Northen West Bank City of Jenin which has left several people dead and others injured.
In a statement Almassri said this aggression is part of the official apartheid Israeli policy of using military force in dealing with the defenseless Palestinian people as an alternative to political solutions to the conflict. “We hold the Israeli apartheid government fully and directly responsible for its repercussions. The Israeli army assault on the northern West Bank city of Jenin is another war crime and that it will not bring security and stability to the region.”
The Ambassador stressed that the Palestinian people will not be divided, surrender or raise the white flag, but will remain steadfast on their land in the face of this brutal aggression until the occupation is defeated and freedom is achieved. All these crimes committed by the occupation government and its terrorist settlers will not achieve security and stability for them unless Palestinian people are free.
Almassri called for decisive international action to immediately stop the aggression, urging the International Criminal Court to break its silence and start holding the Israeli war criminals accountable.
“The double standards and shameful silence of the international community regarding these Israeli crimes encourages the Israeli occupation power to go further in its crimes and flagrant violations that strengthen its occupation and apartheid system which is against the international law and humanitarian law.” He added.
The Palestinian Ambassador made a clarion call for solidarity and support from the world. “We call on progressive peoples, governments and human rights organizations to condemn these heinous crimes that threatens to explode the conflict, in which the consequences will not only paid by the Palestinians but the entire region and the world. The Palestinians will use all means necessary permitted by the international law to defend themselves from this brutal last occupation of the 21st century.”
Meanwhile Jenin deputy mayor Mohammed Jarrar said homes and infrastructure had been destroyed, cutting off electricity and water in the refugee camp.
Aid agencies accused Israeli forces of obstructing access to the camp and impeding the medical response, claims the IDF denies.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said some crews were prevented from operating within the camp, according to the director of the Palestinian Red Crescent society in Jenin, Mahmoud al-Saadi. And the international medical aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) also accused Israeli forces of impeding access to medical care in Jenin. The IDF said ambulances had a “free pass” in the camp.
On Tuesday morning, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said the body of the 10th Palestinian person to be killed was discovered in Jenin. Earlier, the ministry said five of those killed in the attack were teenagers and of the 100 wounded, 20 were in serious condition.
Hagari, the IDF spokesperson, acknowledged on Monday that civilians were among the injured, but insisted the operation only meant to target “terrorists.”
“It’s not an invasion on Jenin, it’s not against the Palestinian Authority. It’s not against innocent, innocent Palestinians. It’s against terrorists in this camp,” he said.
The incursion sparked immediate condemnation. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called the large-scale Israeli military operation “a new war crime” while Egypt called the Israeli incursion an act of “aggression.”
Hamas called on all its cells in the West Bank and Jerusalem to strike Israel “by all available means,” a statement by its military wing said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military acted “against terrorist strongholds in Jenin.”
“In recent months, Jenin has become a safe haven for terrorists. Terrorists perpetrated savage attacks, murdering Israeli civilians, men, women, and children, as many children as they could find,” Netanyahu said in Jerusalem on Monday evening.
