Sanyatwe Appointed Zimbabwe National Army Commander

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Lieutenant General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe as the new Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army with immediate effect.

The post fell vacant following the retirement of Lieutenant General David Sigauke who served as Commander ZNA from 2021 to 2023.

General Sanyatwe, formerly Commander Presidential Guard, retired from the army in February 2019 and served as Zimbabwe Ambassador to Tanzania until his latest appointment.

He becomes the 8th ZNA Commander since independence.

Lt. Gen. Philip Valerio Sibanda (January 2004 to December 2017)

Lt. Gen. Vitalis Musungwa ‘Fox’ Gava Zvinavashe (1992 to 1994)

Gen. Solomon Mujuru (1981 to 1992)

Lt. Gen. Alistair ‘Sandy’ C. L. Maclean (18 April 1980 to 1981)
