Zimbabwe solidifies its dedication to upholding the rights of individuals with albinism in alignment with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, as outlined in the nation’s Constitution.

These rights encompass fundamental aspects such as the right to life, adequate standards of living, social protection, equality, non-discrimination, freedom from exploitation and violence, as well as access to education, health, and employment opportunities, according to a senior government official.

Mrs. Vimbai Nyemba, Permanent Secretary for Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, emphasized Zimbabwe’s efforts during an interactive dialogue with the independent expert on human rights for persons with albinism.

She highlighted the implementation of various policies, notably the National Disability Policy of 2021, aimed at safeguarding the social, economic, and cultural rights of individuals with albinism. Additionally, the recently enacted Persons with Disability Bill mandates the provision of essential health support for this community.

In the education sector, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education collects systematic data on pupils with albinism, including demographic information and learning challenges. This data serves as the basis for tailored educational support to address the specific needs of each student.

Mrs. Nyemba commended the Report of the Independent Expert and reiterated Zimbabwe’s steadfast support for advancing the human rights of persons with albinism.
