UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a rallying call for collective efforts to address the escalating issue of Islamophobia worldwide. In a message marking the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, observed on 15 March, Guterres emphasized the imperative for political, religious, and community leaders to unite against the rising tide of anti-Muslim hate and bigotry.
Highlighting the significance of Ramadan as a time of reflection and solidarity for Muslims globally, Guterres underscored the dual nature of the occasion, acknowledging the anguish and fear experienced by many within the Muslim community. He urged for a cessation of hostilities in conflict zones such as Gaza and Sudan, urging leaders to prioritize peace efforts.
Guterres reiterated the profound contributions of Muslims to various facets of human civilization throughout history, spanning culture, philosophy, scholarship, and science. From luminaries such as Avicenna and Al-Khwarizmi to the broader Muslim community’s contributions across diverse fields, Guterres emphasized the essential role Muslims have played in shaping our shared heritage.
The Secretary-General condemned the proliferation of Islamophobia, noting its manifestation in structural discrimination, socioeconomic exclusion, and unwarranted surveillance.
