Dr Zembe and NDWG officials addressing the media in Harare

The National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), a human rights organization in Zimbabwe, has condemned threats made against its Chairman, Advocate Job Sikhala, following his address at the United Nations 16th Human Rights and Democracy Summit in Geneva, Switzerland.
Sikhala’s speech on May 15, highlighted the prevailing human rights abuses in Zimbabwe, including abductions, intimidation tactics, and political repression.
He specifically mentioned the cases of Moreblessing Ali, who was allegedly murdered by a ZANU PF activist, and Itai Dzamara, who was abducted and has been missing since 2015.
However, some individuals and groups, including ZANU PF officials, have labeled Sikhala’s comments as inflammatory and treasonous.
They claim that his speech incited violence against the government and threatened national security. NDWG Acting Chairman Dr. Wurayayi Zembe dismissed these claims as baseless and politically motivated.
“By threatening Advocate Sikhala, the ZANU PF regime intends to send fear into the entire NDWG leadership and its grassroots consultative structures. However, we are fearless and will continue to speak out against human rights abuses,” Dr. Zembe said.
The organization has also denounced the creation of fake social media accounts in Sikhala’s name, which they claim are being used to spread disinformation and discredit their leadership.
“This is hogwash and nonsensical. We will not be deterred by such tactics,” Dr. Zembe added.
Sikhala’s safety has become a major concern, as he has faced previous legal challenges and has been detained for an extended period.
In 2020, he was arrested and held for 595 days without trial, prompting international condemnation. He is currently seeking medical care outside of Zimbabwe due to his deteriorating health.
