Seoul, South Korea – President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa emphasized the crucial role of agriculture in regional development and food security at the Korea-Africa Summit in Seoul, South Korea.
Speaking on June 5, 2024, President Mnangagwa highlighted Zimbabwe’s achievements in increasing agriculture production and productivity, with the sector now contributing $9.8 billion to the country’s GDP. He attributed this success to investments in modern farming techniques, access to quality seeds and fertilizers, and the conservation agriculture Pfumvudza/Intwasa Model.
The President also announced plans to establish Rural Agri-Village Business Units in all 35,000 villages across Zimbabwe, aimed at climate-proofing communities, ensuring food and nutrition security, and providing incomes.
Despite progress, President Mnangagwa acknowledged Zimbabwe’s vulnerability to climate change and drought, and introduced a wheat-based food security strategy to mitigate these risks.
He emphasized the importance of building resilient agriculture and food systems, prioritizing regional development, and enhancing cross-border infrastructure projects to achieve food self-sufficiency.
President Mnangagwa also highlighted the potential for Africa-Korea partnerships to exchange knowledge, expertise, and technology in agriculture, promoting mutual benefits and prosperity for both regions.
The summit aimed to promote cooperation between Korea and African countries in agriculture, trade, and sustainable development.
