Zimbabwe Scales Up Food Deficit Mitigation and Urban Cash Transfer Programmes

Harare, Zimbabwe — The Cabinet has unveiled a comprehensive report on the Food Deficit Mitigation Strategy and Urban Cash Transfer Programme, presented by the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Honourable July Moyo. The report outlines the government’s intensified efforts to distribute grain to vulnerable populations and ensure food security across the nation.

The Cabinet reported an increase in grain distribution during the week starting 20 June 2024. By 25 June 2024, a cumulative total of 51,415.02 metric tonnes of grain had been distributed to food-insecure individuals. The distribution figures by province are as follows:

  • Manicaland: 7,780.64 metric tonnes
  • Mashonaland Central: 5,891.09 metric tonnes
  • Mashonaland East: 5,207.06 metric tonnes
  • Mashonaland West: 6,078.17 metric tonnes
  • Masvingo: 10,243.25 metric tonnes
  • Matabeleland North: 3,215.13 metric tonnes
  • Matabeleland South: 4,803.48 metric tonnes
  • Midlands: 7,845.30 metric tonnes

In addition to the above, a total of 2,816.80 metric tonnes has been collected to date across all provinces under the Zunde RaMambo/Isiphala Senkosi programme, which aims to support community grain reserves.

The Cabinet also advised that beneficiaries of the Food Deficit Mitigation Strategy and Urban Cash Transfer Programme, both in rural and urban areas, will be expected to participate in Public Works programmes. This initiative aims to enhance community infrastructure and promote sustainable development while addressing immediate food security needs.
