Meet the New US Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Tremont

On July 17, 2024, the new United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Pamela Marie Tremont, presented her letter of credence to President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, officially commencing her tenure in the Republic of Zimbabwe. A key message from the meeting emphasized the commitment of both countries to elevate their bilateral relations.

Ambassador Tremont arrives in Harare at a time when expectations are high for improvements in the US-Zimbabwe relationship, which is currently hindering smooth cooperation in areas of trade, investment, and economic development.

A veteran diplomat with three decades of experience garnered from her previous deployments in Africa, Europe, and America, Ambassador Tremont succeeds Ambassador Brian Nichols, who departed in 2021. Following Nichols’ departure, Thomas R. Hastings and then Elaine French served as Chargé d’Affaires until Tremont’s appointment as the substantive Ambassador.

Pamela M. Tremont was confirmed by the US Senate to be the US ambassador to the Repubic of Zimbabwe on May 2, 2024. She has been a member of the U.S. Foreign Service since 1992.

Tremont was most recently Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires in Stockholm, Sweden. Prior to that she was
Assistance Coordinator and Deputy Chief of Mission in Kyiv Ukraine between 2017-19, for which she was awarded the Baker Award for Outstanding Deputy Chief of Mission.

From 2014 to 2017 she was Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia
Cyprus.

Her other previous assignments include Deputy Director for NATO Policy in the State Department’s European Bureau Political-Economic Counselor in Lusaka, Zambia, and political-military officer at the U.S. Embassies in London and Ankara, DS
well as in the Department’s Africa bureau.

She has also served in the State Department Operations Center, as well as at the U.S. Embassy in Port Louis, Mauritius and the US Consulate General in Calgary, Canada.

Ms. Tremont holds a Bachelor’s from Baylor University and a Master’s in National Security Resource Strategy from the National Defense University. She is married to Eric Tremont and they have one son.
