HARARE – In a ceremony commemorating Egypt’s National Day, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ambassador Frederick M. Shava, emphasized the longstanding and resilient relationship between Zimbabwe and Egypt. This event, celebrating Egypt’s Revolution Day, underscored the robust diplomatic and cooperative ties between the two nations.
Ambassador Shava reflected on the historical solidarity between the countries, noting Egypt’s support during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. “Zimbabwe and Egypt share a history of strong ties dating back to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle,” he stated. This historical connection has fostered ongoing cooperation and mutual support.

Despite the geographical distance, Zimbabwe and Egypt have consistently aligned in their pursuit of peace, development, and mutual prosperity. Ambassador Shava praised the collaborative spirit defining their bilateral relations, marked by mutual respect and a shared vision for a better future.
Ambassador Shava lauded Egypt’s significant contributions across various fields. “Egypt has made significant contributions through its rich cultural heritage, literature, science, medicine, and governance,” he remarked, highlighting how these achievements have inspired other nations, including Zimbabwe.
A notable recent development in their bilateral relations was Egypt’s generous donation of cholera vaccines and other medical supplies to Zimbabwe in June 2024. This gesture was a testament to the strength of their partnership and mutual support.
A significant milestone was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on bilateral cooperation in planning, designing, constructing, and managing the New City of Mt. Hampden. Minister Shava expressed optimism about this collaboration, stating, “We look forward to a fruitful partnership towards tangible and sustainable infrastructural development.” The MoU aims to leverage Egypt’s urban development expertise to support Zimbabwe’s infrastructural ambitions.

Addressing global challenges, Ambassador Shava underscored the importance of international cooperation in tackling issues like climate change and socio-economic disparities. He commended Egypt’s leadership in the global fight against climate change, particularly its hosting of the COP-27 conference in Sharm El Sheikh. “Egypt has shown commendable leadership in the titanic fight against climate change,” he noted.
As Zimbabwe and Egypt continue to build on their historical ties, Ambassador Shava articulated a vision for enhanced cooperation in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and technology. This partnership is poised to become a model of South-South cooperation, demonstrating how countries can work together to achieve shared goals and address common challenges.
