In a poignant press conference held in Harare yesterday, the President of the United African National Council (UANC), Rev Dr. Gwinyai Muzorewa, spoke out against the denial of bail to the 78 Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists who were arrested in June. The activists were accused of participating in an illegal gathering allegedly aimed at planning demonstrations ahead of the upcoming SADC summit. President Muzorewa vehemently condemned the denial of bail, emphasizing that every citizen has the right to bail and the fundamental right to peacefully demonstrate to express their grievances.
Rev Dr. Gwinyai Muzorewa issued a powerful statement, stating, “It is a gross violation of our citizens’ rights to deny bail to the CCC activists who were arrested. Every individual, regardless of their political affiliation, deserves the right to fair treatment under the law, including the right to bail. This denial goes against the principles of justice and democracy that we strive to uphold in our nation.”
The arrest and subsequent denial of bail to the CCC activists have sparked widespread condemnation from various quarters, with human rights groups calling for their immediate release. Among those arrested is a 2-month-old baby who was reportedly detained alongside the child’s mother. The shocking revelation of a baby being caught up in the arrests has further fueled public outrage and intensified calls for justice and respect for human rights in Zimbabwe.
Muzorewa also called upon the people of Zimbabwe to unite and work together towards building a better future for the country. He emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations as a legitimate means for citizens to express their discontent and demand accountability from the government. The UANC President’s impassioned plea for unity and peaceful coexistence resonated with many Zimbabweans who are yearning for a more inclusive and harmonious society.
