UNICEF Urges Action on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Zimbabwe

HARARE—UNICEF has called on the Zimbabwean Government, donor community, and partners to prioritize sustainable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities for children and families across Zimbabwe.

This appeal was made during a media briefing at UNICEF’s Harare offices today.

“Increased funding will enable the implementation of innovative approaches that build community resilience to effectively mitigate the consequences of climate-related shocks, preserve development gains, and protect the well-being of children,” a UNICEF representative emphasized.

The organization urged journalists to disseminate this vital message through their networks, highlighting the urgent need for WASH interventions in response to Zimbabwe’s ongoing drought emergency.

Zimbabwe is currently grappling with the severe impacts of an El Niño-induced drought, making access to safe water a pressing priority for affected communities. UNICEF emphasized that stakeholders must ensure adequate safe water is made available to all.

The representative also underscored the crucial role of safe water in a child’s development and the fulfillment of their rights to health, nutrition, education, and protection.

“Without access to safe water in its community, household, and school, a child cannot fully benefit from all its rights and develop its full potential,” she added.

UNICEF’s call for action aims to mobilize support and resources to safeguard the health and future of Zimbabwe’s children.
