The Late Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube
Zimbabwe mourns the passing of Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube, a revered nationalist stalwart, veteran freedom fighter, and dedicated public servant, who passed away on October 3, 2024, after a long battle with a kidney-related illness. His death marks the end of a life committed to the liberation and development of Zimbabwe, both on the battlefield and in public service.
Born in 1938, Colonel Dube belonged to a generation forced by the brutality of settler colonial rule to take up arms in the fight for independence. As a loyal soldier, he distinguished himself in the liberation struggle, fighting tirelessly for the freedom of Zimbabwe and playing a pivotal role in shaping the new nation. His commitment to national unity was exemplified during the integration process following independence, where he was instrumental in merging the previously warring forces into a cohesive and loyal National Army.
After leaving the military, Colonel Dube was entrusted with leading the Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI), where he played a vital role in ensuring the security of the nation during times of international sanctions and embargoes. His leadership in ZDI was crucial in defending Zimbabwe’s hard-won sovereignty.
Transitioning to politics, Colonel Dube served as a member of Parliament and a ZANU PF Politburo Member. He was a humble and hardworking politician who developed a deep empathy for the ordinary people of Zimbabwe. His tireless advocacy for the interests of the people endeared him to communities across the nation, cementing his reputation as a grassroots politician.
Colonel Dube’s unwavering national outlook, which transcended divisions of tribe, region, and language, remains one of his greatest legacies. He was a firm believer in the unity and diversity of Zimbabwe, always seeking solutions to national challenges within the context of a united nation.
On behalf of the Government, ZANU PF, and the people of Zimbabwe, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa expressed his deepest condolences to the Dube family, especially to Mama Dube and their children. The President described Colonel Dube as a man of steadying wisdom and honest counsel, whose heroic deeds in service of the nation will forever secure him an honorable place in Zimbabwe’s history.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the liberation of Zimbabwe and his post-independence service, Colonel Tshinga Dube has been declared a National Hero. His final resting place will be at the National Heroes Acre, where he will lie among the luminaries who fought for the nation’s freedom.
Colonel Dube is survived by his family, comrades, and the people of Zimbabwe, who will forever cherish his memory and honor his extraordinary life of service.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
