A key meeting between the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and media leaders has resulted in a pledge to enhance cooperation, signaling a shift in their historically challenging relationship.
During the meeting held yesterday, both parties stressed the need for mutual respect, understanding, and ethical journalism.
Commissioner Paul Nyathi highlighted that while the ZRP and the media have distinct Constitutional duties, it is essential to respect each other’s roles.
“We must respect each other’s roles,” Commissioner Nyathi said. “This will help us collaborate effectively and maintain peace and stability in the country.”
Zimbabwe Media Commission Chairperson, Professor Ruby Magosvongwe, praised the commitment, stating it would encourage transparency and accountability.
“The media plays a key role in connecting the public with law enforcement,” Professor Magosvongwe said.
“We are eager to work closely with the ZRP to uphold democratic values.”
The meeting concluded with an agreement to hold regular quarterly meetings to ensure open communication and address any issues. The ZRP also committed to training officers on the roles and responsibilities of journalists.
This development marks a significant step toward improving relations between the ZRP and media leaders, fostering transparency and accountability in Zimbabwe.
