President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed profound grief following the passing of Dr. Sydney Zikuzo Gata, the Executive Chairman of ZESA Holdings, who died on July 3, 2025, after a brief illness.
In a condolence message released Friday, President Mnangagwa described Dr. Gata as a dedicated and visionary leader who played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s energy sector.
“Dr. Gata was a committed figure who dedicated his life to providing energy solutions and infrastructure development for the nation. His legacy will forever be etched in the chronicles of our history,” he said.
Dr. Gata’s illustrious career spanned decades, marked by significant contributions to academia, engineering, and public service. He began as a lecturer at the Chelsea College of Aeronautical Engineering in London and later taught at the City University Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics before returning to Zimbabwe to lecture at the University of Zimbabwe’s Faculty of Engineering.
His leadership in the energy sector saw him rise to become the first black General Manager of the Electricity Supply Company, later serving as CEO of ZESA Holdings. Among his notable achievements were the Hwange Power Station Phase 1 and 2 projects, the rehabilitation of Kariba Hydropower Station, and the addition of over 900MW to the national grid through the Hwange Units 7 and 8 projects.
Internationally, Dr. Gata served in key roles, including as a regional coordinator for the World Energy Council’s Sub-Saharan African Region and as an advisor to the African Development Bank. At home, he chaired the Rural Electrification Board, driving initiatives to expand electricity access across the country.
President Mnangagwa extended his condolences to Dr. Gata’s family, particularly his wife, Hon. Angeline Gata, Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, and their children.
“May they find solace in the knowledge that his works will continue to benefit future generations,” the President said.
Dr. Gata’s passing has left a void in Zimbabwe’s energy sector, but his contributions ensure his legacy will endure. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
