Criminals are cashing in on desperate citizens by advertising fake loans and grants online, often posing as government officials on social media platforms. Unsuspecting people who respond to these adverts are tricked into paying so-called “administration fees” — only for the scammers to vanish without a trace once they collect the money.
This fraudulent scheme has now come to the Government’s attention, prompting a strong warning about the surge in fake online messages luring Zimbabweans with bogus promises of quick money.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce said it is deeply concerned about fraudsters “purporting to be officials from the Ministry and offering fake grants and loan opportunities through email and Facebook.”
Citizens are urged to ignore suspicious adverts, emails, or offer letters claiming to offer government loans or grants and to always verify any communication directly with the Ministry. Authorities say only public vigilance can stop scammers from preying on people’s dreams and savings.
“Be warned that these loan and grant offers are the work of scammers and must be ignored,” the Ministry stressed. “Anyone approached by such a proposition through email, Facebook or any other means must not entertain such offers.”
While reports have been made to authorities and action is being taken, the Government says public vigilance is key to stopping the fraudsters.
“Please stay safe and report any suspicious messages,” urged the Ministry, calling on citizens to verify any questionable communication through official channels before responding.
