BAZ Licenses Six New Community Radio Stations, Expanding Grassroots Access to Information

By Staff Reporter

The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has licensed six new community radio stations as part of its nationwide drive to strengthen grassroots communication and promote media diversity.

Community radios are community-owned broadcasting platforms established to serve specific localities. They focus on local languages, local issues, and community participation, giving residents a platform to share information, preserve cultural heritage, and engage in public dialogue.

In its press release, BAZ said the new licences were issued in accordance with the Broadcasting Services Act [Chapter 12:06]. The newly approved stations are:

Chivi Community Radio Station (Chivi)

Chomazumba Community Radio Station (UMP)

Dande FM (Dande)

Jakata FM (Gutu)

Ndera FM (Marondera)

Nhimbe FM (Makoni)
BAZ Acting Chief Executive Officer Eng. M. Chakanyuka said the milestone demonstrates the Authority’s commitment to broadening access to information and supporting local content creation.

“This milestone reflects the Authority’s ongoing commitment to expanding community access to information and promoting media diversity across Zimbabwe,” he said. “The licensing of these stations is a significant step in empowering communities to tell their own stories, preserve local cultures, and participate meaningfully in national dialogue.”

He added that BAZ remains focused on fostering “a vibrant, inclusive, and compliant broadcasting sector that serves the needs and aspirations of all Zimbabweans.”

The introduction of more community radio stations is expected to improve information flow in underserved areas, enhance disaster awareness, and strengthen cultural identity through locally driven programming.
