President Emmerson Mnangagwa has dismissed Honourable Winston Chitando from his position as Minister of Mines and Mining Development with immediate effect.
In a statement released Monday evening, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, said the decision was made in terms of Section 340, as read together with Section 108 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
Dr Rushwaya also announced the elevation of Honourable Polite Kambamura to the post of Minister of Mines and Mining Development.
Kambamura, who had been serving as one of the two Deputy Ministers in the same ministry, is widely regarded as a technically proficient mining expert. Born in Bindura, he holds a Master of Science in Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sustainability from Bindura University of Science Education, and a BSc (Hons) in Mining Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe.
He boasts extensive experience in the mining sector, having worked in gold and nickel operations under Ashanti Goldfields, Lonrho and Anglo American. He is also the sitting Member of Parliament for Sanyati, a seat he has held for two consecutive terms (2018 and 2023).
Kambamura’s appointment places him at the helm of one of the country’s most sensitive and high-stakes portfolios and will be expected to steer the ship for the next level of the mining industry.
