Laughter and animated conversation filled the courtyards of Zeenatul Islam Masjid in Bulawayo, this Sunday 28 December 2025 as the aroma of freshly prepared meals wafted through the air with community members gathered for a moment of shared joy and generosity.
The occasion marked a philanthropic outreach led by the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Honourable Raj Modi, who donated food hampers to underprivileged members of the community. The initiative forms part of his broader social responsibility programme, which has seen him extend support to vulnerable groups across religious and social divides.
The gesture brought relief and cheer to vulnerable families, reinforcing the spirit of compassion and unity while underscoring the Deputy Minister’s continued commitment to community welfare.
Addressing attendees, Hon. Modi said his presence was part of his annual December giving tradition.
“We always make these donations in December. We remember the underprivileged in our communities, and that is why we give food hampers and support initiatives like this one.”
He further revealed that under his recent outreach programme, US$5 000 was distributed to 10 churches, with each church receiving US$500 to assist vulnerable families.
“Leadership must go beyond speeches. It must bring relief and dignity to the people,” he added.
The donation, handed over to the Muslim community was applauded by organisers and community members. For many, Hon. Modi’s presence highlighted the importance of political leaders actively participating in positive initiatives that uplift marginalised communities.
The gesture also reflected his alignment with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s development philosophy of “leaving no one and no place behind.”
The fundraiser itself was vibrant and inclusive. Zeenatul Islam Masjid hosted the event and provided space for a charity lunch organised by Al Huda Shelter, where proceeds from each plate sold went towards supporting orphaned children.
“We wanted this to be more than just a fundraiser. Having leaders like Hon. Raj Modi here sends a strong message that our children matter,” said Shaikh Isaac Ali, one of the founders of Al Huda Shelter.
Shariah Yassin Ali, co-founder of the children’s shelter, echoed the sentiment.
“This kind of support strengthens our mission,” she said. “It reminds us that caring for orphans and the elderly is a collective responsibility.”
Beyond charity, the event also empowered youth and small businesses. Among the exhibitors was Sister Nafeesa Phiri, a young entrepreneur selling children’s clothing, whose colourful display attracted families attending the event.
“This platform means a lot to young people like me. It allows us to grow our businesses while contributing to a cause that supports children and families in need,” said Sister Nafeesa.
Representatives from Ecocash, Alletah Gwayi, and Perseverance also attended the event, with Alletah hailing the fundraiser as a model for inclusive development.
“This programme brings together faith, health, business, and social welfare,” she said. “That is how communities become resilient.”
Expressing gratitude on behalf of beneficiaries, Mrs Yaseen said:
“We would like to thank Honourable Raj Modi for his kind gesture of giving us this food humpers.”
While the fundraiser successfully raised support for Al Huda shelter, the strong presence of Hon. Raj Modi — alongside community leaders, youth entrepreneurs, and service providers — demonstrated how leadership, compassion, and action can combine to uplift the underprivileged.
The program was was also attended by Cde Ishmael Jassat, ZANU PF Deputy Secretary for Security Bulawayo and the Chairman of Zeenatul-Islam Masjid in Barham Green who thanked the Muslim community for attending this event.
“I would like to thank everyone who came to support this program, Bulawayo Islamic Society, Kokney Muslim Society and all the setilite mosque and muslims around Bulawayo,” said Cde Ishmael Jassat.
