Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe, the son of former Zimbabwean leader, Robert Mugabe has been charged alongside his co-accused, Thobias Mugabe Matonhodze, in connection with a shooting incident at a private residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The pair face multiple charges, including attempted murder, defeating the course of justice, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The matter has been remanded to March 3, when the accused are expected to apply for bail. Prosecutors have indicated that the State will oppose bail.
The attempted murder charge stems from the shooting of a gardener at the Mugabe family residence in the affluent suburb of on Thursday. The victim sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
According to reports, South African police officers who responded to the scene were unable to locate the firearm allegedly used in the incident, which has not yet been recovered. The missing weapon forms a key part of the charge of defeating the course of justice.
The court indicated that further proceedings were postponed to allow for the profiling of the accused persons ahead of the bail hearing.
The latest incident has once again thrust the Mugabe family into the spotlight, drawing attention to the seriousness of the charges, while authorities in South Africa continue investigations, including efforts to recover the firearm central to the case.
