Victory in Scotland

GLASGOW, Scotland — Zimbabwe’s St John’s College Pipe Band has clinched first place at the inaugural World Youth Pipe Band Championships, marking a historic victory on the global stage.
The band, sponsored by Expacare, outshone 32 competitors from across the world to secure the top spot in the Novice Juvenile B category, a triumph that also saw them win the award for best piping. This is the second time the Harare-based outfit has achieved such a prestigious honour.
The competition, hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, is a new addition to the international piping calendar, designed to celebrate and showcase young talent in the centuries-old Scottish musical tradition. Drawing bands from Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa, the championships are considered a major milestone for emerging ensembles.
Adding to their glory, St John’s Novice Juvenile A band finished second in drumming among 14 bands, underscoring the depth of musical talent at the school.
The band’s journey to Scotland was made possible through tireless fundraising efforts by parents and the school community, as well as corporate sponsorship from Expacare. College authorities also paid tribute to parents, supporters, and mentors who guided the group to this achievement.
The victory puts Zimbabwe firmly on the map in the international pipe band movement, a tradition rooted in Scottish culture but increasingly embraced worldwide. For the young pipers, it was also a chance to feature on international media platforms, including the BBC, further cementing their place in the spotlight.
