Celebrating the Legacy of Karikoga Kaseke: A Luminary in Zimbabwe’s Tourism Sector

The news of the passing on of former Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Karikoga “KK” Kaseke, on February 29, 2024, has left a profound sadness across the tourism and hospitality landscape.

Zimbabwe mourns the loss of a true luminary who, in his illustrious 16-year tenure at the helm of the ZTA, facilitated the implementation of groundbreaking initiatives that firmly established Zimbabwe as a leading tourist destination both locally and internationally.

Under his visionary leadership, Zimbabwe proudly hosted prestigious events such as the UNWTO General Assembly in 2013, the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo, and the Harare International Carnival.

At some point, the Harare International Carnival attracted three of world’s top five carnival groups namely Trinidad and Tobago which at the third edition brought a total of 45 people, Notting Hill (UK) which had nine as well as the renowned Brazilian Samba which consisted of 12 people.

These flagship events did not only showcase the nation’s rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural landscapes but also elevated Zimbabwe’s profile on the global tourism map.

Dr. Kaseke’s unwavering commitment to excellence was evident in his relentless efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure, elevate industry standards, and nurture local talent. His dedication played a pivotal role in shaping and promoting the renowned brand, “Zimbabwe: A World of Wonders.”

Amidst challenges and external pressures, including economic sanctions and negative propaganda that faced Zimbabwe after the landmark Land reform programme, Dr. Kaseke stood firm in line with the country’s mission to reframe Zimbabwe’s narrative.

Through resilience and determination, he championed efforts to portray Zimbabwe as a welcoming, peaceful, and vibrant destination for travelers and investors alike.

As a driving force behind various brand promotion initiatives, Dr. Kaseke’s advocacy for Zimbabwe’s tourism sector has left an indelible mark, inspiring future generations to carry forward his vision of excellence.

In recognition of his unparalleled contributions, the president of Zimbabwe, His Excellency Cde Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has bestowed upon Dr. Kaseke a state-assisted funeral, honoring his legacy and dedication to Zimbabwe.

Born in Harare in 1962, Dr. Karikoga Kaseke’s distinguished career began in the Zimbabwe National Army, where he rose through the ranks to become a senior officer. His subsequent roles in public service, including serving as Permanent Secretary in the Transport and Communication Ministry, underscored his leadership acumen and commitment to national development.

In July 2005, Dr. Kaseke assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, a position he held until his retirement in 2021. His exemplary service and achievements were recognized with an Honorary Doctorate in Public Administration by the Commonwealth University in collaboration with the London Graduate School in 2017.

Dr Kaseke suffered a debilitating stroke in 2018, and had to retire on medical grounds in 2021. His retirement in 2021 marked the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished in the hearts of Zimbabweans.

As we reflect on Dr. Karikoga Kaseke’s life and contributions, we celebrate his enduring impact on Zimbabwe’s tourism sector and the countless lives he touched.

His name will forever be synonymous with excellence and innovation in Zimbabwe’s tourism industry, a true pioneer and visionary leader whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
