Nyabira came alive on Saturday as seven schools and academies gathered at the newly opened Lord Brighton High School for an exhilarating sports tournament that highlighted the power of sports in uniting communities and nurturing young talent.
The event, which featured rugby and Taekwondo, brought together teams from Little Giants Academy, Goromonzi High School, Wise Awol, and Genesis Academy, all competing in the under-14 category. In a display of skill and determination, Goromonzi High Girls secured the gold medal, while the host school boys team, Lord Brighton College The Foxes, emerged as champions.
The atmosphere was electrifying as parents and teachers cheered on the young athletes, celebrating their enthusiasm and competitive spirit.

Lord Brighton High School is quickly establishing itself as a center for sports excellence. One of the key figures behind the tournament, Mr. Dennis Takaza, emphasized the school’s commitment to identifying, nurturing, and developing young athletes. He expressed the belief that every child has a unique gift, whether in sports, arts, or academics, and that it is the responsibility of educators to help them reach their full potential.
The school has made significant investments in sports infrastructure, boasting facilities for soccer, golf, swimming, tennis, baseball, and volleyball. Plans are already underway to introduce water polo and floodlit playing fields to ensure year-round sporting activities.

Beyond rugby, the event also featured a Taekwondo Youth and Cadets Training Seminar, drawing in children as young as five years old. The training was led by Master Admire Tshitshiliza, a 4th Dan black belt holder who recently returned from Korea. He expressed his delight at working with such an eager group of students and emphasized the role of Taekwondo in fostering discipline, mental toughness, and focus.
He noted that instilling these values in young athletes would help them become responsible individuals who positively contribute to society, particularly in light of growing concerns over drug abuse among youth. His attachment to Lord Brighton College reflects the school’s commitment to holistic education, blending academic excellence with structured sporting programs.

The Nyabira community showed overwhelming support for the tournament, with many parents expressing appreciation for the opportunities being provided to their children.
One parent shared her gratitude, saying her child had found a safe and supportive environment to develop his sporting talent. Another parent, Ms. Kupara, praised the school for organizing such a successful event, emphasizing how wonderful it was to see children enjoying themselves while competing at a high level.
Following the success of the tournament, Lord Brighton High School has ambitious plans for future sporting events. Construction is already underway for a heated swimming pool, a golf course, and additional sports facilities, reinforcing the school’s commitment to year-round sporting excellence.
