Sybeth Musengezi, leader of a newly formed empowerment movement-Suthisa ilizwe-Gutsaruzhinji (Si-G)- recently delivered a sharp critique of the Zimbabwean Government during a press conference in Harare, highlighting the nation’s economic struggles and rampant corruption.

The event, marked Musengezi’s first major address following recent disruptions by “thugs” at his previous press gathering. In his address, he stated that the Zimbabwean economy is faltering due to systemic issues, including corruption and gross mismanagement, which have forced many citizens to seek opportunities abroad.

“The economy is not functioning well due to corruption, gross mismanagement, and looting,” said Musengezi.

The Si-G leader did not hold back in his criticism of influential figures, specifically naming controversial tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo as emblematic of the corruption plaguing the nation. He added that these individuals were only concerned with accumulating wealth and plundering the country’s resources.

Amid his criticisms of the government, Msengezi announced the launch of The Patriots Movement for Empowerment, aimed at addressing misgovernance in Zimbabwe. Highlighting the importance of local solutions over foreign aid, he remarked on the previous U.S. decision to cut funding to developing countries, calling for Zimbabweans to seek home-grown solutions.

Despite his sharp criticisms, Musengezi expressed a desire to collaborate with the government for the benefit of the nation.

“I apologize for challenging President Mnangagwa’s legitimacy. I want to focus on empowering the people,” he said, indicating a shift from confrontation to cooperation.

The former Zanu PF member also criticized the recently enacted Private Voluntary Organisation bill, labeling it a draconian law aimed at stifling NGOs and civil society efforts.

With regards to corruption, he pledged to act as a whistleblower on corruption and to provide guidance on economic issues.

As Zimbabwe continues to face significant economic challenges and political unrest, Musengezi’s new movement aims to challenge the current regime and advocate for accountability and empowerment among citizens.
