Harare – Zimbabwe this Friday commemorated World School Milk Day at Louis Mountbatten Primary School in Harare, coinciding with the Plastic-Free July Schools Competition awards, with government officials underscoring the dairy sector’s role in child nutrition and the country’s Vision 2030 agenda.

Guest of Honour, Dr. Pious Makaya, Chief Director for the Directorate of Veterinary Services, said milk supplied through the national school feeding programme undergoes strict inspections by the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Child Care to ensure safety, affordability, and nutritional value.

Dr. Makaya revealed that high-risk dairy animals have been vaccinated against Foot-and-Mouth Disease to safeguard milk supplies. He further noted that all 255 registered dairy farmers and processing plants comply with international quality standards, ensuring disease-free milk.

“These measures not only guarantee safe and nutritious milk but also drive the Agriculture and Food Systems Transformation Strategy, Sustainable Development Goal 2, and environmentally sustainable growth that is central to food security and Zimbabwe’s march toward Vision 2030,” Dr. Makaya said.

The event was held under the theme: Food Security: Everywhere, Everyday.
