Zimbabwe and the Republic of Korea are set to strengthen cooperation in basic education following Cabinet approval of a memorandum of understanding providing for the exchange of knowledge, information and experience between the two countries.
The agreement is intended to improve the quality, relevance and effectiveness of basic education in Zimbabwe by drawing on areas of educational expertise developed in South Korea.
The memorandum was presented to Cabinet by the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi.
According to the Cabinet briefing issued on October 13, 2026, the proposed cooperation will focus on knowledge and information exchange to support improvements in the education sector.
South Korea has experience in several areas identified as relevant to the cooperation, including teacher development, curriculum innovation, technology education, assessment systems and school infrastructure.
The partnership is expected to provide Zimbabwe with opportunities to learn from these areas of experience as it pursues its national education and development priorities.
The agreement also builds on the cordial relations between the two countries.
Government says the cooperation responds to the need to improve the quality and relevance of education in the context of technological advancement and changing demands in the global economy.
The emphasis on basic education places the proposed partnership within an important area of national development, as educational systems respond to evolving skills requirements and new approaches to teaching and learning.
Through the exchange of knowledge and experience, the two countries intend to establish a framework for cooperation that can support educational improvement.
Cabinet’s approval provides the basis for the proposed bilateral arrangement.
However, the briefing does not specify the implementation timetable, the number of schools or teachers expected to participate, or the financial arrangements underpinning the cooperation.
Details of specific programmes and activities will be important in determining how the agreement translates into practical benefits for Zimbabwe’s education system.
The partnership represents another avenue through which Zimbabwe is seeking international cooperation to strengthen education and improve learning outcomes.
