The Ceasefire in Gaza: A Futile Victory for Israel

By Munyaradzi Munaro & Mafa Kwanisai Mafa

The recent ceasefire in Gaza, effective as of 19 January 2024, may temporarily halt the genocide that has plagued the besieged enclave for over a year. However, a critical question persists: Has Israel achieved a significant victory in this prolonged conflict? This writer contends that the answer is a resounding no. Instead, Israel’s actions in Gaza have undermined its moral standing, alienated its supporters, and emboldened resistance movements in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.

Erosion of International Support

Israel’s disproportionate use of force, characterized by the targeting of civilians and accusations of genocide, has alienated even some of its staunchest allies. Over 50,000 lives have been lost in this senseless war, including thousands of women and children. The narrative of Israel as a “chosen nation” defending itself against “terrorists” grows increasingly hollow in the face of overwhelming evidence of indiscriminate violence. The widespread destruction of hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure has sparked global outrage, particularly among nations historically sympathetic to Israel.

Prominent global powers like South Africa have taken decisive steps, with Pretoria leading a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its occupation of Palestinian territories. Fourteen other countries have signaledtheir intention to join South Africa’s legal challenge, further isolating Israel. The charges of genocide and violations of international law underscore growing international frustration with Israeli policies.

Impact of Legal Proceedings

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The implications are profound, as countries such as the European Union, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom are now obligated to arrest him should he enter their territories. These developments highlight the growing pressure for accountability and justice for Palestinians. Advocacy groups and human rights organizations have intensified their campaigns, with initiatives such as the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement gaining unprecedented momentum.

Historical Context and Resilient Resistance

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is rooted in nearly a century of occupation and displacement. Resistance to Israeli control has evolved over decades, from the establishment of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to the emergence of groups like Hamas. Today, resistance movements symbolize a deeply ingrained ideology driven by a collective yearning for freedom, justice, and self-determination.

This ideology transcends organizational leadership, as evidenced by the resilience of Palestinian society. In the aftermath of the ceasefire, Hamas—while controlling Gaza—faces monumental challenges in rebuilding the war-torn enclave. Yet, the enduring spirit of resistance remains steadfast, signaling that as long as occupation persists, so will the determination to oppose it.

Humanitarian Crisis

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza persists despite the ceasefire. The blockade continues to choke the enclave, depriving Palestinians of food, clean water, medical supplies, and electricity. The international community’s failure to pressure Israel into lifting the blockade exacerbates the suffering of 2.3 million people trapped in what many describe as an open-air prison.

Recent reports reveal that over 80% of Gaza’s population depends on humanitarian aid. The destruction of critical infrastructure has made access to essential services almost impossible. While aid agencies struggle to respond, the lack of meaningful international action underscores the disparity in global responses to crises of similar magnitude elsewhere.

Global Shifts in Opinion

Global public opinion, particularly among younger generations, has shifted dramatically against Israel’s policies. Mass protests in cities such as London, New York, and Johannesburg have drawn millions, demanding an end to the occupation and justice for Palestinians. Social media platforms amplify these voices, showcasing the devastation in real-time and fueling grassroots activism.

South Africa’s leadership in the ICJ case is symbolic of the broader realignment of international attitudes. African nations, historically aligned with the Palestinian cause, are increasingly vocal in their condemnation of Israeli actions. This solidarity was evident in the African Union’s recent resolution urging Israel to end the occupation and recognize Palestinian statehood.

Lessons from Lebanon

Israel’s previous military engagements, such as its 2006 war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, offer valuable lessons. Despite its military superiority, Israel failed to achieve decisive victory, leading to a strengthened Hezbollah. Similarly, the Gaza conflict underscores the futility of relying solely on military solutions. The Palestinian resistance, fueled by decades of occupation and systemic injustice, remains undeterred.

Economic Ramifications for Israel

Israel’s economy has also felt the strain of prolonged conflict. The costs of maintaining military operations in Gaza, combined with the international backlash and BDS campaigns, have begun to impact sectors such as technology, agriculture, and tourism. Multinational corporations have faced increasing pressure to sever ties with Israeli businesses linked to the occupation. Notable examples include major brands reevaluating partnerships to avoid reputational damage.

In addition, Israeli citizens have expressed growing dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the conflict. Protests within Israel—although limited in comparison to global demonstrations—reflect a segment of the population questioning the long-term sustainability of military policies. Economic hardships exacerbated by international sanctions and divestments further compound domestic unrest.

The Role of Regional Players

Regional actors, including Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, have played pivotal roles in brokering ceasefires and facilitating humanitarian aid. However, their influence also underscores the complexity of Middle Eastern geopolitics. Egypt’s control of the Rafah crossing, for instance, has often been a point of contention, with critics accusing Cairo of complicity in the blockade. Qatar’s financial aid to Gaza, while providing temporary relief, highlights the inadequacy of piecemeal solutions.

Iran and Hezbollah’s vocal support for Palestinian resistance further complicates the regional dynamics. While their involvement bolsters the morale of resistance movements, it also provides Israel with justification for portraying its actions as part of a broader fight against terrorism. This narrative, however, increasingly fails to resonate with the international community.

A Turning Point in Global Advocacy

The ceasefire has galvanized international advocacy for Palestinian rights. Grassroots organizations and influential figures have intensified their efforts, leveraging platforms like the United Nations and the ICC to demand accountability. The widespread dissemination of images and testimonies from Gaza has personalized the conflict, fostering empathy and solidarity across borders.

Universities worldwide have become hubs for activism, with student-led campaigns calling for divestments from companies complicit in the occupation. Academic institutions have faced mounting pressure to align their investments with ethical considerations, further signaling a shift in global attitudes.

The Path Forward

The ceasefire represents a fragile bandage on a deep wound. For a genuine and lasting solution, Israel must address the root causes of the conflict: the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and the systemic denial of Palestinian rights. Until these issues are resolved, the cycle of violence will persist, with devastating consequences for both sides.

Israel’s actions in Gaza have proven counterproductive, eroding its international legitimacy and fostering a new generation of resistance. The global community must seize this moment to demand an end to the occupation and support a just resolution rooted in dialogue, compromise, and respect for human rights. Anything less will perpetuate the conflict, ensuring that peace remains an elusive dream.

The ongoing crisis serves as a stark reminder of the limitations of military solutions. True victory lies in the courage to embrace dialogue, the wisdom to seek compromise, and the humanity to prioritize peace over power. Only through such an approach can the embers of resistance be extinguished and a future of coexistence and mutual respect be realized.
