The recent ceasefire in Gaza, effective as of 19 January 2024, may temporarily halt the genocide that has plagued the besieged enclave for over a year. However, a critical question persists: Has Israel achieved a significant victory in this prolonged conflict? This writer contends that the answer is a resounding no. Instead, Israel’s actions in Gaza have undermined its moral standing, alienated its supporters, and emboldened resistance movements in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.
Erosion of International Support
Israel’s disproportionate use of force, characterized by the targeting of civilians and accusations of genocide, has alienated even some of its staunchest allies. Over 50,000 lives have been lost in this senseless war, including thousands of women and children. The narrative of Israel as a “chosen nation” defending itself against “terrorists” grows increasingly hollow in the face of overwhelming evidence of indiscriminate violence. The widespread destruction of hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure has sparked global outrage, particularly among nations historically sympathetic to Israel.
Prominent global powers like South Africa have taken decisive steps, with Pretoria leading a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its occupation of Palestinian territories. Fourteen other countries have signaledtheir intention to join South Africa’s legal challenge, further isolating Israel. The charges of genocide and violations of international law underscore growing international frustration with Israeli policies.
Impact of Legal Proceedings
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The implications are profound, as countries such as the European Union, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom are now obligated to arrest him should he enter their territories. These developments highlight the growing pressure for accountability and justice for Palestinians. Advocacy groups and human rights organizations have intensified their campaigns, with initiatives such as the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement gaining unprecedented momentum.
Historical Context and Resilient Resistance
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is rooted in nearly a century of occupation and displacement. Resistance to Israeli control has evolved over decades, from the establishment of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to the emergence of groups like Hamas. Today, resistance movements symbolize a deeply ingrained ideology driven by a collective yearning for freedom, justice, and self-determination.
This ideology transcends organizational leadership, as evidenced by the resilience of Palestinian society. In the aftermath of the ceasefire, Hamas—while controlling Gaza—faces monumental challenges in rebuilding the war-torn enclave. Yet, the enduring spirit of resistance remains steadfast, signaling that as long as occupation persists, so will the determination to oppose it.

Economic hardships exacerbated by international sanctions and divestments further compound domestic unrest.

Qatar’s financial aid to Gaza, while providing temporary relief, highlights the inadequacy of piecemeal solutions.
Iran and Hezbollah’s vocal support for Palestinian resistance further complicates the regional dynamics. While their involvement bolsters the morale of resistance movements, it also provides Israel with justification for portraying its actions as part of a broader fight against terrorism. This narrative, however, increasingly fails to resonate with the international community.

The ceasefire has galvanized international advocacy for Palestinian rights. Grassroots organizations and influential figures have intensified their efforts, leveraging platforms like the United Nations and the ICC to demand accountability.
