Harare, Zimbabwe – The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is facing a turbulent moment, with its leadership under scrutiny after a High Court ruling nullified the outcomes of its 2022 Extraordinary Congress.
In response to this upheaval, Senator Douglas Mwonzora addressed the media to outline his perspective and next steps for the party.

Mwonzora expressed his deep concerns regarding the implications of the court’s decision, asserting that it permits individuals who have defected to ZANU-PF to interfere in MDC matters. He articulated this frustration through a striking analogy, comparing the situation to asking Highlanders to select a coach for Dynamos, which underscored the perceived absurdity of the ruling.

He emphasized the importance of upholding the decisions made during the congress, arguing that those who were not part of it should not be allowed to contest its legitimacy. “Those who did not participate in the congress have no right to challenge its outcomes,” he stated, reinforcing his commitment to the party’s democratic principles.

Looking forward, Mwonzora announced the party’s decision to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court, viewing this as a critical move to protect the MDC’s integrity. He also extended an olive branch to former leaders, including Nelson Chamisa and Tendai Biti, inviting them to return and work toward a unified party. “We welcome them to join us, as the party has a big tent approach,” he urged.

Despite his calls for reconciliation, political analysts caution that the entrenched factionalism within the MDC poses a formidable challenge. The ability of Mwonzora to bridge these divides and garner support will be pivotal as the party navigates this crisis. As he faces these pressures, the future of the MDC hangs in the balance.
