Mutoko — In a move set to enhance agricultural value chains and youth empowerment, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) today handed over a refrigerated vehicle and a delivery truck to the Mutoko Fruit and Vegetable Hub.

The donation is expected to improve the storage, transportation, and marketing of horticultural produce from the area, which is one of Zimbabwe’s key fresh produce-growing regions.

The handover ceremony was attended by senior government officials, local farmers, and development partners. Speaking at the event, the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Honourable Tino Machakaire, commended the ILO for its continued support to Zimbabwe’s youth development initiatives.

“Allow me to begin by expressing the Ministry’s sincere appreciation for the enduring partnership between the Government of Zimbabwe and the International Labour Organisation,” said Minister Machakaire. “This collaboration has, over the years, played a significant role in promoting youth empowerment across various sectors.”

The Mutoko Fruit and Vegetable Hub has become a focal point for agricultural transformation in Mashonaland East Province, creating employment opportunities and improving livelihoods for hundreds of young farmers and entrepreneurs.

The provision of the refrigerated vehicle and truck is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, preserve the freshness of produce, and widen market access both locally and regionally.

ILO representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting decent work and sustainable livelihoods in Zimbabwe, particularly among young people and women in rural communities.

With agriculture remaining a cornerstone of the country’s economic growth and food security strategy, such investments in logistics and value addition are crucial to transforming subsistence farming into viable agribusiness ventures.

The donation marks yet another milestone in the ILO-Government of Zimbabwe partnership aimed at building inclusive, productive, and resilient communities.
