Harare, Zimbabwe – On World Environment Day, the Center for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) sounded the alarm on Zimbabwe’s escalating environmental crisis, urging the government and extractive industries to take immediate action.
Zimbabwe faces severe environmental challenges, including land degradation, deforestation, pollution, and resource depletion, largely driven by unsustainable mining practices and weak governance. The country’s natural resources, including arable land, wetlands, and water sources, are under threat.
CNRG highlighted the devastating impacts of mining activities, including open cast mining, which has rendered significant portions of land unusable. The organization documented numerous cases of illegal mining, deforestation, and environmentally destructive activities, depriving local communities of their benefits.
The statement called on the government and extractive industries to enhance transparency, accountability, and community participation in natural resource management. CNRG also demanded stronger environmental laws, increased fines for environmental violations, and investment in ecosystem restoration initiatives.
As Zimbabwe marks World Environment Day, the country’s environmental challenges pose a stark reminder of the need for urgent action to protect its natural resources and ensure a sustainable future.
