Memorial stone laid in remembrance of the Kamandama Mine Disaster Victims
Harare, Zimbabwe -The Centre of Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) commemorates the 52nd anniversary of the Kamandama mine disaster, which claimed the lives of 427 mine workers in 1972. The tragedy remains the deadliest mine accident in Zimbabwe’s history.
Despite decades passing, mine accidents continue to plague the industry, with 237 fatalities reported in 2023 alone. This year, 15 miners were trapped underground at Redwing Mine, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by mining workers.

CNRG is calling for stricter regulations, regular inspections, and robust safety protocols to prevent accidents. The organization advocates for rigorous audits, stiffer penalties, and investment in personal protective equipment to ensure worker safety.

The Kamandama disaster serves as a stark reminder of the need for improved safety measures in Zimbabwe’s mining industry. By prioritizing worker safety and enforcing strict protocols, the country can work towards zero harm initiatives and prevent further tragedies.
